"…the rise of the faux-vintage photo is an attempt to create a sort of “nostalgia for the present,” an attempt to make our photos seem more important, substantial and real. We want to endow the powerful feelings associated with nostalgia to our lives in the present. And, ultimately, all of this goes well beyond the faux-vintage photo; the momentary popularity of the Hipstamatic-style photo serves to highlight the larger trend of our viewing the present as increasingly a potentially documented past."

i’ve decided it’s a three-way tie for my favourite non-fiction reads of 2011. i’ll select a short quote from each of them and post them here.

"…“The Past is a Grotesque Animal” eggs on my urge to theorize feelings, yes. But also, to theorize my theorizing of past feelings. “I find myself searching for old selves” literally, yes, maybe. But also, “I find myself searching for old selves within an framework of feminist embodiment.” Which, I will always argue, is why we write all this shit to begin with."

rgr-pop’s thoughts still find myself searching for old selves. ummmm can we talk about high-fiving for feminist re-thinkings of my favourite of montreal song? and references to livejournal? and to why i constantly take self-portraits, constantly try to document my life, as a way of figuring my shit out? fuck yeah.

i gave myself another stick-n-poke tattoo last night. it reads “quiet” and it’s my reminder to listen twice as much as i speak.
these past few weeks have taught me a lot, and one of the things i realized was that i wasnt doing a very great job of listening this past year, which ended up unintentionally hurting a lot of people including myself.

someone just posted an unnecessarily bitchy comment response to something i wrote on their post, and froze the replies. at first i was like “WTF BITCH you’re gonna get it from me!” and then i thought, WHO CARES.

why it's fucked that some people don't understand how i could have a broken heart

  • as a culture
  • i think most people accept that you can fuck without having serious emotions attached
  • but for some reason the converse (intense emotions without sexual contact)
  • is just
  • erased
  • from a gmail convo with a friend
