Because the United States has its own political prisoners. Because the United States also harshly penalizes those who fight patriarchy, racism, and militarization in the best ways they know how. Do not forget them.

trigger warning for discussions of harassment and consent
Here is a letter that was sent to CUTV. If you support consent and work to fight homophobia, sexism, racism and transphobia, this might interest you since the person who ‘tricked’ people to make fun of people who lack privilege in general (but it seems to be mostly women, queers and trans* that are his preferred targets) and promote his own comedy career. I am very mad at the moment and if you feel like writing to CUTV about this, please do! Don’t hesitate to PM me if you need more info. CUTV is usually very cool, so I believe that they will help for the removal of this video and hopefully will remove this disrespectful person from their programming.
Dear CUTV,
I am a Concordia student who has been featured in a video of Adam Susser against my will. It is a very serious ethical issue since I told him and his fellow cameraman, after I understood he was not taking me seriously and start making fun of how I dress, that I didn’t consent to be in his video and that he should remove any footage I appeared in. Since he clearly presented himself as a reporter for CUTV, I took for granted that he would respect my removal from this video – in other words, I trusted CUTV.
As a Women’s Studies student who has been involved in the strike movement, I witnessed the effort of CUTV to produce an alternative view on the student strike, giving a voice to people who don’t have it in the mass media. I was very surprised to find out that Adam Susser’s video was not there to discuss critically sexism and comedy, but rather make fun of us protesters – and that I’ve been featured there against my will. Not only we have been tricked as a group of feminists hoping to discuss our actions in a media that we believed in- but I also have to deal with personal issues of appearing in a video that I felt was not ‘safe’ (I then removed my consent, remember?).
Because feminists always have bad press, we all thought that it might be a good opportunity to explain what was going on at the demonstration against Testostérone, especially since everything we have done online to promote it have been filled with hateful comments, particularly of homophobic nature. It is no surprise then that after Susser sent the video to Mike Ward (who posted it on his website and Facebook page, encouraging Susser to keep doing this kind of ‘comedy’), there is several comments where I can read that I am an ugly lesbian that no men will want – and several other misogynist attacks. And the part where I actually say stuff that matter, like Gilles Rozon’s rape accusations and the effect of common-sense racism, homophobia and sexism in the Québécois comedy culture, was not featured in this video, which is available online.
We all know that Internet is not a ‘safe space’. As we all witnessed with Concordia’s backlash on strikers, we know our school is not ‘safe space’ neither. I assume that Susser is a fellow Concordian – which give me anxieties. I do not want to encounter him at school, where I study and I’m involved with organization fighting sexism, racism and homophobia (areas that seems to be Susser’s favourite targets). Thanks to his anti-feminist work, I will never speak in front of a camera again, and I will avoid to be present in a space where people are filming – after all, who knows their intentions?
CUTV staff, I am asking your help to get this video removed from the Internet. It is not available on the CUTV website anymore, but it is on Susser’s Youtube and Facebook accounts as well as Mike Ward’s website and Facebook account. I sincerely hope that you give a real talk about ethics to your ‘reporter’ Adam Susser. I had personal issues about being in this video, and he and his cameraman didn’t respect my choice not to be featured in this video. There are at least four fellow protesters who witnessed me asking him to be removed from this video. I am very mad and considering legal recourse. I think a progressive tribune such as CUTV should stop promoting Adam Susser and his hate speech. I still cannot believe that CUTV give him the resources to do this type of ‘work’. Not only his videos are all about disinformation (like what you see in numerous mainstream media), but it is also his personal attack on feminism. He used his privilegs to jump into a heated debate where he was able to promote his personal career by manipulating people who are ALWAYS dismissed in popular culture – feminists and their allies.
I sincerely hope you will do your best to respect my demands to not appear in any of Susser’s video (at any point). If he needs a reminder since he don’t know what consent is – I’m the girl with the ‘Don’t fucking touch me’ vest (which has been use to identify me in the trolling of hate speech comments).
Thank you,
(name withheld for privacy)
UUUUGH. i looked for this video on youtube and it is BEYOND painful. @44 secs?! that’s what fucking unwanted touching and harrassment looks like. adam susser clearly thinks it’s “funny” to do something a stranger CLEARLY does not want him to do. write to CUTV to tell them not to work with this so-called journalist and comedian, and to remove the people from the video who did not give their consent.
edited to add: i left a comment on sunday on the youtube video link and the CUTV link. CUTV removed the video from their website but have not responded to people’s concerns about hiring adam susser. my comment on adam susser’s youtube channel has been deleted.
ah, the internet misadventures of a “humourless feminist.” where shitbags send you hate messages, encourages his friends to harrass you, and then blocks YOU on twitter. where douchebags make videos like these and delete any comment that isn’t a glowing review, but lets strangers say “it’s just too bad some frustrated cunts can’t just live and let live”. fun times.

CeCe McDonald just took a plea deal
from Dean Spade:
CeCe just took a plea deal—2nd degree manslaughter with a recommended 41 month sentence (actual sentencing hearing will be in a month). Horrifying to watch her forced to recount the events of her attack on the stand, to watch the judge speak to her condescendingly about how pulling scissors out of her purse as her attacker chased her down the street unlawfully endangered her attacker. This system is so disgusting. Still, I am inspired by her support team here in MN and people all over sending love. How fucking awful that a woman can’t even defend herself. While the outcome is surely not the most ideal, at least that fucker is dead and can’t hurt anyone else.
biggest sigh. so fucking wrong.
does anyone know if we can send mail to the prison cece will be located in? i think we all need to show her how much we fucking love and support her.
while i love that more people are potentially being inspired by an incredible photographer thanks to miss moss, i can’t help but wonder… the very same miss moss is sharing these (highly circulated) photos of a wonderful queer androgynous babe, has also used the word “tranny” as an insult. yet, she would laud a stylish gender bender who rejected the binary, and may very well be called a “tranny” in 2012.
Wonderful photo, important criticism.
i should clarify, too! i emailed diana at miss moss about this and not only did she apologize, she deleted the original post and was just really great about the whole thing. it’s unfortunately all too rare for people to acknowledge they used a shitty slur, apologize for it, and make an effort to make amends - and i think it’s important that people know diana made those steps.
Let Transgender People On Canadian Airplanes!
Trans* people are banned from flying on airplanes in Canada due to a new section in the Identity Screening Regulations that are used in airports. The section says that an airplane should not except someone as a passenger if they don’t look like the gender on their identification information.
Unfortunately, in order to change the sex marker in Canada, a person has to have proof of surgery or that surgery will be happening in at least one year. So for the trans* people that aren’t going to have surgery, haven’t been able to have surgery, or those that are gender nonconforming (or genderqueer), this makes it impossible for them to travel.
Please tell the Canadian Ministry of Transportation to change this policy immediately and let trans* people fly on airplanes! This is discrimination and it is wrong!
Petition is here — http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/Canada-Let-Transgender-People-Fly/
If you don’t sign this petition, I will personally canoe over to your house (since I won’t be able to fly) and terrorize the shit outta you with my gender.
i’ve seen a lot of misinformation and contradictory stuff going around about this issue on facebook tumblr and twitter. i think it speaks both to the advantages and disadvantages of social media and activism/social justice. but that’s a whole other kettle of fish… i’m mostly reblogging to share what other resources i’ve found re: this discriminatory law and how we should stop it.
1. first things first? it is not “new” per se, it has been on the books since July 2011. people are just calling attention to how discriminatory it is now. make sure you’ve got your facts right.
2. a lot of the criticisms aren’t addressing how hotly racialized this issue is… the debate, specifically in quebec, around women wearing the niqab in courts, classrooms, and airports is often presented as a “security” concern, arguing that male terrorists would try to disguise themselves as women by wearing a niqab or burqa. yes, this is fucked up. but it’s part of what led to the rule that states “An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if … (c) the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents.” we can’t ignore that, while obviously transphobic, this is also part of canada’s increasingly racist public policies (i.e. talking about refugees as being part of “human smuggling” rings, caring about refusing entry to potentially terrorist ”boat people” while ignoring the rampant abuses of the largely underpaid and non-union immigrant labour force, etc.)
BUT! these people lay out these issues better than i do…
RECOMMENDED READING:
here are also many other petitions out there, with more signatures already:
but you know what i think about petitions. yes, they have a purpose, but at the end of the day: call up your MP. call Minister of Transport Denis Lebel and tell him why you think this law is horrible. call up the people who have brought up these issues in the House, like MP Justin Trudeau, and tell him to put the heat on more. if you’re a canadian who votes, demand more from your “democracy.” get this off the internet, and get this law changed.

This blog post outs several transwomen with both pseudonyms AND legal names, their photos, where they can be found at the festival, and in some cases their profession and employment. Being on this “hitlist” of transwomen was not consented to by any of them, and it associates them with accusations of volatile behavior that the author has absolutely no proof any of them participated in. The blogger refuses to use female pronouns and asserts that these women, who live in one of the most marginalized segments of our society, are “chest pounding” and trying to assert male privilege in invading a womens’ space – as if people who’ve survived gender dysphoria and live outside of our binary ideas of gender have any male privilege to speak of.
Here’s the original post in question (tw for transphobic and cis-sexist bullshit). This is absolutely ridiculous on so many levels. Regardless of how you feel about transpeople, you should absolutely be concerned that Wordpress is allowing defamatory, person-targeting practices like this to happen, despite a clear violation of their Terms of Service.
You can report GenderTrender to Wordpress for violating terms of service HERE.
Two specific clauses you can cite:
Types of Blogs that violate our advertising policy:
Personal attack blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of attacking an individual or group of individuals are not welcome on WordPress.com. We have a particularly low tolerance for anonymous bloggers who make personal attacks without standing by their words with their real name.
Terms of Service: inciting violence/making threats:
By making Content available, you represent and warrant that…the Content does not contain threats or incite violence towards individuals or entities, and does not violate the privacy or publicity rights of any third party.
Please fill out the form, mention those clauses, and reblog.
IF YOU HAVE THE STOMACH FOR IT (big if, because they ask you to quote passages from the blog entry in question in the report form), PLEASE FILL OUT THE FORM. I read in one of the notes that one of the women in question lost her job due to this hateful post (but I couldn’t reblog from that person because of formatting nightmares.) I just don’t get people sometimes.
i am at a loss for words. i can’t believe such hate-filled people can think doing this is okay, and i’m disappointed that a company like wordpress cannot clearly see hate speech in its face.
