"Young women’s involvement in online DIY cultures and in social networking can illustrate how they are using new technologies to grapple with shifting boundaries between public and private, their interpellation as consumer citizens, the contraction of a traditional public sphere—in particular the absence of spaces for critique, self-expression and peer dialogue—and a loss of faith in conventional politics and formal political institutions…However, in some manifestations, they also reveals the difficulties of contending with the kinds of citizens young women are rewarded for being: consumption-focused and on display."

- Anita Harris, Next Wave Cultures: Feminism, Subcultures, Activism (2008)

This addresses a big concern of mine that’s also being discussed really intelligently in the blogosphere- the feminist embrace of the individual fashion blog and the simultaneous frustration over the increasing homogenization/commercialization of that platform.

i used to embroider the backs and cuffs of all my button ups but man it’s been years and i rarely wear those shirts anymore….
this is tooooooo badass, i gotta do it.

this is something i’ve often dreamed of doing for years, but with my vintage dresses.

Looks like I found my next project! DIY saddle shoes, and they are red and white! Even though Valentine’s Day has past, these can still be worn, and should be! (via A Beautiful Mess)

these are pretty fun, but i’d be more likely to do the opposite (paint what they left white red, and leave the other part white) because i’m a klutz and scuff shoes all the time.

i got this print from friend prices at the milwaukee zine fest (mine is printed on red instead of grey though) i am putting it above my work area as inspiration and admonishment.

SO GOOD. (i also love that there is a mixer, because cooking is work! and is not often enough recognized as such)

Got a little crafty in between finals and made these bad boys. Super simple DIY I found online a couple weeks ago. Used 3 mason jars(the DIY I found originally used pickle jars), 3 plastic toy animals, krazy glue and Krylon metallic gold spray paint. I’m pretty pleased with the results. :)

AMAZING. what a great idea!

Whoaaa
