"Even though I cannot be sorry that certain dead visionary women have attained in death the adoration they deserved in life — I’ve already mentioned Sylvia Plath, or Anne Frank or Virginia Woolf (Marilyn Monroe? Amy Winehouse?) — there is also something creepily avuncular and overheated about the culture industry “cumming” all over what it either never honestly bothered to nourish or insisted on taking only exactly the way it wanted to. Female commentators, including the brilliant ones, are often beset by the problem of (over)identification when they write about such figures, while male commentators cannot seem to give praise or produce readings, however just, without betraying a kind of respectful arousal (or aroused respect?) rendering themselves the somewhat abashedly horny liberal uncles of the world, free to jizz into history on the figure of the actual woman whose intention it was decidedly not, via her photographs, to merely physically seduce them."

Ariana Reines, “An Hourglass Figure: On Photographer Francesca Woodman” (April 4th, 2013)

I’ve read this twice in twenty-four hours. I cannot shake this.

watch this documentary for free from now until march 10th only! also, nfb has an entire page dedicated to canadian women in film including free films and essays.

“Feminism has shaped the society we live in. But just how far has it brought us, and how relevant is it today? This feature documentary zeroes in on key concerns such as violence against women, access to abortion, and universal childcare, asking how much progress we have truly made on these issues. Rich with archival material and startling contemporary stories, Status Quo? uncovers answers that are provocative and at times shocking.

i’m screening this in my living room tomorrow - if you’re in quebec city, be there.

fiercefashionfutures:

NOW IS THE TIME to submit your proposal for the Fierce Fashion Futures track for the 2013 Allied Media Conference! The deadline to submit is March 8th! The conference will take place June 20-23rd in Detroit, MI.

PLEASE REBLOG AND SHARE WIDELY!

Fierce Fashion Futures call for proposals:

Fashion is media and politics at the same time. Every day we communicate something about who we are, who we want and what kind of world we want with our clothes and our bodies. How can we understand the ways that fashion builds community and simultaneously excludes from community? How can we reclaim beauty in our own fat, QTPOC, disabled queer radical selves? Fashion can be used as emotional and spiritual armor as well as physical protection from police and chemical weapons. What new possibilities for expression and network building are created by wearable electronics, e-textiles and new fashion technologies? How does fashion work in radical media, dance and performance?

We want to build a community of radical fashion lovers, who see fashion not as big business or an elite sport, but as an art form for all people with subversive potential as a space of self-expression and creation. We want to broaden the ways that the media activist communities that are a part of the AMC think about fashion as a kind of politics in their everyday life. We hope to expand the conversation about gender, race, sexuality and ability by having these spaces to talk about how they play out on our bodies through clothing. We are looking to help people build new skills for creating their own clothes, expanding the options people have for their fashion choices in the future and for making wearable electronics, expanding our possibilities for creating everyday technologies.

We are looking for the following kinds of proposals:

HOW-TO Such as: skills for making and re-making your own clothes; creating wearable electronics; sustaining yourself through DIY business.

THEORY Such as: how fashion can help us explore our identities; fashion without overconsumption; fashion as community building/fashion as homogenizer.

ACTION Such as: using fashion to embrace and empower your body; understanding and fighting sweatshops; using fashion to protect yourself in direct-action.

file under: totally surreal moment of the day…

context: i was reading/sharing great responses to her transphobic tweets this weekend, and she retweeted one of the links. fingers crossed this means she’s actually reading the thoughtful responses?

underrated badass feminists

i’ve had this conversation with countless friends over the weekend: how frustrating is it that when mainstream feminists make missteps, we tend to see them in the media even more often than when strong voices are calling attention to various injustices and oppression? why is it so much more tempting to tear other down than to celebrate the ones who aren’t constantly fucking up re: intersectional feminism? why are my favourite pieces of writing, where people actually define a feminism that is something i want to be a part of, often written in response to these blatant failings and the ignorance of others who call themselves feminists?

aside from those moments, i also find myself frustrated to hear the same five or six “celebri-feminist” names thrown around, when i often feel like there are so many other people who have said the same things they do, better, and way before them.

in light of these unfortunate injustices, here is my (short) list of highly underrated badass feminists with handy dandy links to their websites. (keep in mind this is my personal list, and this is coming from a white-cis-queer able-bodied canadian feminist’s perspective)

from cassie:

In my head, I’m trying to figure out what separates potential with missteps from shitty persons who are not worth it. Do I have more patience with Azealia because she sticks up for cis-black girls, even as she shits on trans* folk in her lyrics? What does that say about me, even as I am critical of her as I listen to her music? Do you see something “feminist” in the production of Grimes’ albums or her interviews? Is that why you’re not about to write her off yet? Is our willingness to wait and give them a chance due to them having the potential (and actually becoming) really big things? Do we think that they will listen to us as they are smaller, so we can influence them as they get bigger?

I’m not so sure. Is potential what saves these two from being written off?

okay you’re right she does have three albums, but i suppose i’m pointing more to the fact that she’s only been releasing music for two years (versus madonna 1983, gwen stefani 1992, etc).

i think those are really good questions, and i wish i had more answers. an example of the “smaller” band: earlier this year i started listening to a band from new brunswick who sing in franglais/shiac, loved them, and then a few months later came across a poster of the three white girls in the band wearing “war paint” and feathers. i decided i was done. i emailed them, messaged them, they responded defensively - i.e. the “i’m sorry you were offended” non-apology - but the photo is no longer on their facebook page or website. and at least i told them why they were losing a fan.

in the case of grimes, maybe it’s partially because i’ve met claire, have been to her shows, have interviewed her. she’s not an unattainable rock star (yet). i like what she has to say in response to male journalists who have described her as “intentionally cutesy” because she’s a small woman with a lisp and a high-pitched voice. i like how she brings up gender in a smart and frank way, as opposed to a marketing ploy à la “girl power!” as an empty shell. as someone who has been alienated/pissed off in music scenes (as a concert-goer, as a music journalist, in punk & indie rock scenes) it is refreshing to see someone whose music i enjoy also discuss these things frankly.

and maybe that’s why i expect more of her, because i know she is smart. because i feel like if she heard these concerns, she might seriously take them into consideration. maybe it’s because i am waiting to fully be able to be call myself a “fan” of people who make things i enjoy, by people i want to be friends with. maybe you and i are looking for people who remind us of ourselves? i know it’s unrealistic to expect per but it is so so endlessly frustrating to constantly be disappointed by people a) doing shitty things and b) responding to criticisms about those shitty things in defensive ways.

"Is it unfair to ask Dunham to represent all of womanhood onscreen? Of course it is. But here’s the thing: no one did. We merely asked that she take a step back and question the underlying reason for why Girls looks the way it does."

What the Girls spat on Twitter tells us about feminism by Bim Adewunmi at The Guardian (October 8th, 2012)

Read the whole thing. Great read for fans of Dunham & Moran or those who are completely fed up with the so-called “faces” of (white, liberal, boring) feminism.
