image description: a grrrl virus flyer photocopied on pink paper. an image of courtney love (in the 90s?) playing an electric guitar that has kittens on it, and some text is pasted over top of that grainy image. it reads: GRRRL VIRUS - Girl, don’t ever let them silence you. What you have to say is important. It is relevant. Girl, you are sensational. Girl, you are capable. YOU ARE INDESCRIBABLE YOU ARE UNDENIABLE YOU ARE REVOLUTIONARY YOU ARE FUCKING BEAUTIFUL DON’T EVER LET THEM SILENCE YOU. girlVIRUS/grrrlVIRUS@facebook
Have I ever seen a black womyn on one of these? A fat womyn? I still love the messages but why haven’t I seen one yet?
Because these aren’t new, they’re all from the 90s when feminism was even less concerned with fat positivity, intersectionality, etc.
If I knew any feminists/humanists here I’d totally have a go at making some new ones of these.
these are not from the 90s. this flyer was made like a week ago. grrrlVIRUS is right now! <3
and yes, there are flyers with black grrrls and with fat grrrls. i’ve posted some on this tumblr and will post more. maybe some of the flyers are getting reblogged more than others?
and please, feel free to make flyers of your own. they are all about speaking back and we can always use more and more diverse representations of women.
it’s funny how some “feminists” are quick to jump on a person’s back over something trivial. oh my god, they posted a picture of a white girl. that must mean they’ve never posted something similar of a fat girl. or a black girl. or a transgirl. that must mean no posters of said fat girls or black girls or transgirls exist. that must mean it’s SEXISM OR CISSEXISM OR RACISM OR ABLEISM because i’ve never seen one so they must not exist and you’re further promoting white supremacy.
It’s not trivial, especially when this movement is so up in it’s ass about “appearing” to be inclusive while still caring only about a narrow-margin of people: white, middle-class, cis-gendered, abled-bodies, straight women. If you don’t care about everyone else and don’t want to make an effort to understand that all struggles are interconnected, then go back to the second wave.
(bolded emphasis added by me) i really wish reblogsfromadelaide was joking. check your privilege. bowfolk speaks the truth! these flyers are supposed to be empowering, and it’s fucking important to have these conversations about representation or lack thereof. (sounds like a great workshop waiting to happen)
